What is titanium dioxide?
Titanium dioxide is a naturally occurring oxide of titanium, refined into a fine white powder with an exceptionally high refractive index. In plain terms: it scatters light better than almost any other white material, which is why a small amount delivers so much whiteness and hiding power (opacity).
Rutile vs. anatase — the two main grades
TiO₂ comes in two crystal forms, and choosing the right one matters:
- Rutile TiO₂ — higher refractive index, better opacity, superior UV and weather resistance. The default for paints, coatings, plastics and outdoor applications.
- Anatase TiO₂ — slightly whiter/bluer tone but lower durability and weather resistance. Used in indoor applications, paper, ceramics, and some rubber and cosmetic uses.
Within these, grades are further tailored by surface treatment for specific systems (water-based paint, solvent-based paint, masterbatch, etc.). Selecting the correct grade is where supplier technical support pays off.
