Aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents are straight- and branched-chain petroleum solvents with a very low aromatic content. Compared with aromatic solvents such as toluene and xylene, they offer a milder odour and a gentler handling profile while still dissolving rubbers, waxes, oils and many resins effectively.
They are the backbone solvent of the footwear and rubber adhesive industry — used in solvent-based contact cements and rubber solutions — and are widely used as thinners in decorative and industrial paints, printing inks, rubber processing, degreasing and extraction. Aliphatic solvents (SBP, hexane, heptane, white spirit) are straight- or branched-chain hydrocarbons with very low aromatic content — milder in odour and gentler to handle. Aromatic solvents such as toluene and xylene have stronger solvency but a harsher odour profile. Many formulations use one or a blend of both.
Footwear and rubber contact adhesives typically use SBP grades or hexane, chosen for their evaporation rate and how quickly the cement tacks off. Our technical team can help you match the grade to your process.
